This is the first book I read that permanently changed my spending habits... When I filled out the financial expenses worksheet provided in "Black Economics: Solutions for Economic and Community Empowerment" by Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu-Africanamericanimages, my jaw dropped when I saw my results. This wasn't just a sheet of numbers anymore. It also included a column to indicate the ethnicity of the person I signed my check over to for each expense. At the time I was supporting Black artists at the yearly BHM event while in corporate America, but, the numbers on that worksheet helped me realize that more than 95% of my money was going outside of the community each month. It became crystal clear that I could do so much better. Black Dollar CirculationBeing more mindful and culturally conscientious of my spending habits is one of the most fulfilling and impactful changes I've made on my life's journey. I've shifted many of my finances around over the years and keep reevaluating as needed. The author gets personal about our finances and the economic drain we participate in when we siphon our dollars elsewhere. Each and every penny does count when we make it our business to support the livelihoods of our friends and family members.
Food, clothing and shelter is a good place to begin to analyze how you can redistribute your money. My routine habits had to change to incorporate my newfound dedication to reaching more Black owned businesses. I added Manny's Grocery for my plantain, palm oil, beans, and home grown honey. Majani Restaurant and Ethiopian Diamond when I want to treat myself to a fabulous meal or The Meal of the Day Cafe for cabbage and out of this world biscuits. I'll get clothing from Kayra Imports, Djenne Collection, or Mizizi.roots of africa. I really felt I got into the big leagues when I joined the South Side Community Federal Credit Union. Gregg H. Brown is doing a phenomenal job keeping our money secure. For contractors I recommend Gregory Cook, Lorne Cook. TCC Mechanical, Inc.(Heating and Air Conditioning) and Steve Stampley (D-Erania Jazz Series's husband). For Moving, you've got to give the business to KUWJ Movers & JUNK Removal, the miracle workers!!!
