Lift Every Voice Book Trailer
Afriware Books, Co is pleased to partner with 12 other Black Booksellers as part of the Black Bookstore Collective.  Registration is required for this event.  A limited number of FREE tickets are being made available, so consider early registration.

Presenting interviews with more than fifty members of the oldest generation of Black Americans, including civil rights activists, hometown heroes, celebrities and many others, this testament to the strength and stories behind these individuals reveals their lives, experiences, and wisdom.

The book includes a foreword by Oprah Winfrey and an introduction by Nikole Hannah-Jones. It was designed by Mike Nicholls, an award-winning Black visual artist; interviews were conducted by a brilliant team of rising Black journalists, many from historically Black colleges and universities; portraits were shot by a talented group of next generation Black photographers.

For so long, too many stories that reveal what it means and feels like to be Black in America have been overlooked outside Black communities. After these long years of racial reckonings and nascent awakenings, Lift Every Voice presents interviews with the oldest generation of Black Americans about their lives, their experiences, and the wisdom that can carry all of us to a better future. Lift Every Voice is named after the James Weldon Johnson poem and hymn "Lift Every Voice and Sing," which is often referred to as the "Black national anthem." This keepsake book is both a testament to the strength of the stories behind them and a triumphant beginning for a new generation of journalists.

Discover a world of creativity and tradition in this fascinating picture book that explores the history and cultural significance of the color blue. From critically acclaimed author Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond, and, an award-winning illustrator, Daniel Minter, comes a vivid, gorgeous book for readers of all ages. centuries, blue powders and dyes were some of the most sought-after materials in the world. Ancient Egyptian painters ground mass quantities of sapphire rocks to use for their paints, while snails were harvested in Eurasia for the tiny amounts of blue that their bodies would release.
And then there was indigo, which was so valuable that American plantations grew it as a cash crop on the backs of African slaves. It wasn't until 1905, when Adolf von Baeyer created a chemical blue dye, that blue could be used for anything and everything--most notably that uniform of workers everywhere, blue jeans.
With stunning illustrations by Caldecott Honor Artist Daniel Minter, this vibrant and fascinating picture book follows one color's journey through time and across the world, as it becomes the blue we know today.

This book offers a collection of tools, including new language that helps us more accurately talk about our emotions and experiences and a new model for cultivating meaningful connection.”

Your ticket includes admission to this exclusive event and a hardcover copy of Atlas of the Heart.

Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston, where she holds the Huffington Foundation–Brené Brown Endowed Chair at the Graduate College of Social Work. Acclaimed musical artist Michelle Williams shares the intimate, never-before-told story of how, even in the midst of enormous fame and success, she battled depression, leading her to find her true calling as an advocate for mental health—especially her own.

As a member of Destiny’s Child, one of the top female R&B groups of all time, Michelle Williams felt blessed. After the group disbanded, she continued to create bestselling albums, appear on television shows, and star in theater productions. Though she had always struggled with low moods, in 2018 her depression deepened, and when she found herself planning her own funeral, she checked herself into a treatment facility. There she found the help she needed to live out the incredible story God was writing for her life.

In her first book, Checking In, Michelle courageously shares the hidden secrets that nearly ended her life; the importance of her faith, family, and friends; and the lessons she learned about prioritizing her mental health. She is on a quest to increase mental health awareness and urges others to understand the importance of “checking in” with themselves, God, and others. Her candid, often humorous, and incredibly brave book will inspire readers who desire hope for their own difficult times.

Michelle Williams will be in conversations with:

May 26:
Chloe Bailey discussing defining identity

May 27:
Taraji Henson and Lecrae discussing conquering anxiety

May 28:
Ms. Tina Knowles-Lawson and LeToya Luckett discussing processing forgiveness

May 29:
Darrel Walls and Dr. Anita Phillips discussing overcoming depression

May 31:
Tamar Braxton, Chandler Moore, and DeVon Franklin discussing embracing singleness

June 1:
Tabitha Brown discussing healing our community

Each night promises to be an experience and begins at 7pm EST and will last approximately 60 min

Pricing:                General admission ticket - $39.99

General Admission Ticket includes one copy of Checking In: How Getting Real About Depression Saved My Life—and Can Save Yours
