BRAINWASHED - BOOK REVIEW

4/6/2024

"Black people are not dark-skinned white people."
-Thomas Burrell"

It was an honor and a pleasure to host this insightful and intelligent man in 2010 for a book signing.  Thomas Burrell's 40+ year experience brought an empowering healing that day.  He explained the problem succinctly and outlined practical solutions.  He likens brainwashing to a long-standing media campaign to promote negative propaganda against Black people.  And, he has dedicated his business, Burrell Communications to disseminate "positive" propaganda.

What are the Effects of Brainwashing?

"Brainwashed - Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority" details the nuances of media campaigns  for the everyday person to quickly master.  A keen understanding will be gained of the importance of "positive, realistic and compelling depictions of black life and culture particularly in the medium of television."
Burrell Communications did research in the '70's and '80s that traced our spending habits back to enslavement.  He understands on a very deep level how we unconsciously view ourselves and how companies tend more often than not to exploit this.  Bringing this to the light allows us to take a step back to dig out the root of our behavior.

This book is a must have for every Black household.  There's a powerful propaganda timeline presented in it called, "Black Inferiority Campaign" that starts  in 1619.  It is filled with full color authentic images that include:
- The Declaration of Independence as a "propaganda masterpiece" in promoting enslavement.
- Branding Jesus white
- D. W. Griffith's "The Birth of a Nation"

- a photograph of "Gone with the Wind" showing Blacks cast in "subservient, brutish, or buffoonish roles."
and so many more movie posters, magazine covers and photographs.

Burrell's savvy advertisement expertise comes out in the selection of his chapter sub-headings.  They include:

Positive Propaganda Cues for Healthy Living

Skank by Any Other Name

Harvesting Hopelessness

From Sharecropping to Payday Lending

This book offers up an intellectually savory meal. Burrell gives us a reorientation on how mainstream media uses popular culture through sinister advertising campaigns.  Historical context makes all the difference in the interpretation of subliminal messaging. Making sense of the madness is just the antidote needed to assist in living a more meaningful and productive life.

Thank you readers for taking time out of your busy day to engage with this post.  It means the world to me.  And, I do hope you'll consider getting or sharing a copy of "Brainwashed - Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority" with someone you think will resonate with the material.  Also, you can watch the 2010 book signing with Burrell on Youtube...  details will be below.
